Security tip

Camera and microphone permissions don't expire. Review them.

After you allow a website or app to use your camera or microphone, that permission usually stays in place until you remove it.

How to tell what's active

On Windows, a camera light or notification appears when the camera is in use, and a microphone icon shows in the taskbar when an app is listening.

Where to review

  • Windows Settings, Privacy and security: camera and microphone, listed by app.
  • Your browser's site permissions: every website you've ever allowed.
  • Teams, Zoom and any meeting tools: check which devices they default to.

Remove access from anything you no longer use or don't recognise.

Across the practice

With Intune, these permissions can be managed centrally, so a rogue browser extension can't quietly keep the microphone. We can review camera and microphone permissions across your company computers and remove what's no longer needed.
